"Doornbos, 76, was hit from behind on July 15 while riding his bike with a friend along Hanna Lake Avenue SE in Gaines Township. He and Claire Elgersma, 69, of Kentwood, were on a 60-mile ride in preparation of a cross country trek to raise money for the poor.
Though they were wearing high visibility clothing, the pair were struck at 7:50 a.m., just south of 92nd Street, by 83-year-old Gerard Geerlings of Caledonia. Police said Elgersma's bike took a glancing blow from the Jeep, but Doornbos was hit directly...."
