"GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin College faculty and staff are mourning the loss of Bill Vande Kopple, a
longtime English professor at the Christian liberal arts
school who died unexpectedly Wednesday.
Vande Kopple, 63, was diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer about a week ago and "passed away peacefully
at home," according to a post on the Facebook page of
the college's English department .
In a letter to the Calvin community, Elizabeth Vander
Lei, co-chair of the English department, wrote that
"Bill was a great and gracious presence among us: he
was a much-loved professor, a prolific scholar, a wise
mentor, and a good friend," according to a statement
on the college's website.
Vande Kopple had taught at Calvin's English
department for more than 30 years, serving as the
department's co-chair since 2008. He was voted
"Professor of the Year" by the 2004 senior class, and
was a mentor to many students, the college said..."
