years, the Calvin women's volleyball team
has captured the national championship!!
The Knights did so in dramatic
style at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse, overcoming a two-sets-
to-none deficit to win a 20-25, 12-25,
25-22, 25-17, 20-18 thriller..."

Knights trailed Cal Lutheran University
2-0 in the national championship match,
but rallied to beat the Regals 3-2 and
claim their second national championship
in four years.
Calvin (35-1), which also won the
national volleyball championship in 2010
and which had been ranked No. 1 most of
this season, edged No. 3 Cal Lutheran
(35-2) 20-25, 12-25, 25-22, 25-17, 20-18.
A 10-minute break between the second
and third sets gave the Knights the
breather they needed to regain their
composure, and the momentum.
"This is a really hard sport to win,
especially at this level," said Calvin
College coach Amber Warners, who is a
Holland native. "We said no volleyball
talk for the first six minutes of that 10-
minute break, but after that, the first
thing I said was, 'We have been in this
situation before, flipped. You can flip it
back."
The Knights, whose only loss this season
came on the DeVos Fieldhouse floor in an
MIAA match against the Flying Dutch, did
flip the momentum following that 10-
minute break, thanks in large part to
tournament Most Valuable Player Maggie
Kamp, a sophomore outside hitter from
Orland Park, Ill. Kamp had 27 kills in the
championship match and 19 of them came
in the final three sets.
"She has that drive and when she gets
ticked off that's how she plays," Warner
said of the 6-foot-2 Kamp, who also was
named a first-team All-American this
year.
"Coming from last year, losing in 5 after
being ahead two, I love those high
intensity moments," Kamp said. "This is
what we play volleyball for, and I do play
better when I'm pretty mad."
Cal Lutheran defeated Wisconsin-Stevens
Point in Friday's semifinals, after Stevens
Point eliminated Hope in the
quarterfinals.
"Huge kudos to Cal Lu," Warners said. "I
thought their team was really, really
good. In a match like that it's too bad
there has to be a loser.",
