PRAYING FOR MY BELOVED CRC MEMBERS & CALVIN COLLEGE et al to NOT ACQUIESCE TO FAR-LEFT LIBERALISM TO TRY TO BE ‘COOL’:

JESUS SAID: “I pray not that thou should take them out of the world, but that thou should keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

And for their sakes ..."

CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 27, 2016

NCAA III Track and Field Championships Day Two Report;
Strohbehn Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

WAVERLY, Ia. - Calvin College sophomore Ethan Valentine powered his way into the finals of the 400 meters at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a school record time of 47.14 in the Friday afternoon prelims.

Valentine (Powell, Oh./William Mason HS) came in as the No. 2 seed in the 400 meters and held his seed while breaking his previous school record of 47.32 set at the MIAA Championships earlier this month. Valentine won his heat, nipping Daniel Pietsch of Emory who took second in 47.15.

Top-seeded James Wilson of Monmouth College (Il.) had the top time of the afternoon, clocking in with a time of 47.06.

"Ethan ran his prelim race plan very well and came up with a school record in the process," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "I want to credit assistant coach Rick Otte who has done a super job with Ethan's training. We are looking forward to Saturday."

Valentine will be one of two members of the Calvin men's track and field team competing on Saturday. Junior Zach Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) is also slated to run in the finals of the men's steeplechase.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

WAVERLY, Ia. - Calvin College sophomore Bethany Love made her debut at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and did so in strong fashion. Love (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) tied for 15th in the shot put with a throw of 42-4 after heading into the meet ranked 21st.

"Bethany competed well at her first national meet," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "She got a taste of what it is like at a national meet and she moved up six places from her opening position. I'm proud of the way she competed today. This experience should make her even hungrier for the future."

The Calvin women's track and field team has two competitors slated to run on Saturday. Senior McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) will run in the steeplechase while junior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Preparatory HS) will run in the 5,000 meters.

MORE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

For the second consecutive year, Calvin College junior Lauren Strohbehn has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in the women's track/cross country division.

As a member of the all-district team, Strohbehn is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.

Strohbehn hails from Stillwater, Minnesota. She is a graduate of St. Croix Preparatory High School. Strohbehn has put together a standout season of distance running on both the Calvin cross country and track and field teams.

During the cross country season this fall, Strohbehn was the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner and the Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year after taking first at the MIAA Championships and at the Great Lakes Regionals. She also took first place at the Calvin Knight Invite in mid-September and was subsequently named the Division III National Runner of the Week by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.  At the NCAA III Championships, she just missed NCAA III All-America honors, placing 40th individually.

Yesterday she powered her way into the NCAA III All-America circle, placing third in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Waverly, Iowa.

Earlier this spring, Strohbehn was an All-MIAA track and field honoree after winning the 5,000 meters at the MIAA Championships. She was later named to the USTFCCCA Division III Great Lakes All-Region Outdoor Track and Field Team. During the winter, she was the MIAA's Indoor Track and Field Champion in the 5,000 meters and was named to the All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field squad.

Strohbehn is scheduled to run in the women's 5,000 meters Saturday at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Academically, Strohbehn is majoring in biology with a minor in kinesiology. She is a five-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll last year.
