PRAYING FOR MY BELOVED CRC MEMBERS & CALVIN COLLEGE et al to NOT ACQUIESCE TO FAR-LEFT LIBERALISM TO TRY TO BE ‘COOL’:

JESUS SAID: “I pray not that thou should take them out of the world, but that thou should keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

And for their sakes ..."

Calvin broke out the bats in the twinbill, collecting 14 hits in game one and 18 hits in game three.

In game one, Hope (5-10 overall, 1-5 MIAA)  (7-1 overall, 3-3 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by sophomore Landon Brouwer in the first inning.

Calvin came back with a run in the second and then exploded for three runs in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Freshman Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) ripped a two-run RBI single in the third, freshman Steven Seager belted a solo home run in the fourth and also added a run scoring double in the fifth.

Leading 11-1, Calvin (7-10 overall, 3-3 MIAA) had to hold on as Hope rallied for seven runs in the sixth on the strength of five hits with Landon Brouwer collecting an RBI single in the rally.

In the top of the seventh, Hope scored two runs on a run-scoring single by freshman Nicholas Lepore. Hope had the tying run on base with two outs but Calvin senior Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) was able to get the final out on a pop-up to short.

Freshman Clay Francisco (Delton/Thornapple-Kellogg HS) picked up the win for Calvin, going 5.1 innings while striking out two and walking one. Freshman Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) joined Wasserberger out of the bullpen for the Knights with Wasserberger picking up the save. Seager went 3-for-3 for Calvin with two RBIs. In game two, Calvin roared out to a 16-0 lead, scoring a run in the first, six in the second, seven in the third and two more in the fourth.

Junior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS) went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. In the second, Wolfe smashed a three-run homer to left-center.

Hope chipped away at the Calvin lead, scoring four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth. With sunlight fading away, the Flying Dutchmen added three more runs in the ninth but Wasserberger was able to get the final two outs in relief to close out the win for the Knights.

Freshman Spencer Yahrmarkt (Sanford/Meridian HS) had another strong start for the Knights, tossing five innings to pick up the win. Yahrmarkt struck out four and walked four.

Junior Matt Kotva went 4-for-5 with thee runs batted in for the Knights while senior Jordan VanderWall had three hits as did Seager. DeZwaan also collected a pair of hits.

"It felt good to get a pair of conference victories," said Calvin head baseball coach John Rypel. "I thought we got real strong starts from a pair of freshmen today and Kyle Wasserberger was a strong senior leader out of the bullpen. Having Colton (Wolfe) back in the lineup was also huge. He lifted the morale of our team and provided a big bat."

The two teams were scheduled to complete the four-game series on Saturday but weather has moved the closing doubleheader to Monday at Hope with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
